Join us for a special public event featuring Amsterdam-based photographer and filmmaker Doug Hancock, whose work explores identity, heritage, and the meeting point between tradition and contemporary life through powerful portraiture and documentary storytelling. Hancock will present a screening of the Riders of the Buffalo Nations documentary followed by a book signing of the exhibition catalog. Riders of the Buffalo Nations is a landmark exhibition of photography, historic objects, and film that brings forward the story of contemporary Native American rodeo, ranching, and Indian Relay set against the Black Hills and the open plains of Montana. Captured on Kodak film during summers in 2022 and 2023, Hancock’s work documents hundreds of hours of lived experience, centered on movement, memory, and cultural continuity.  Hancock’s lens is drawn to the tension and harmony between past and present, where the legacy of buffalo riders—once highly skilled hunters in perilous pursuit—echoes in today’s rodeo and Indian Relay traditions. These practices continue to carry deep cultural meaning, sustaining ties to buffalo, horses, and community identity across generations.
