In honor of the Semiquincentennial, Niobrara County is celebrating the unique history of each of its communities. On Flag Day, June 14, 2026, we will be honoring Van Tassell, a small town on the border with Nebraska. Van Tassell is home to the first American Legion post in the United States, Branstetter Post No. 1, established in 1919. To honor the post, a flag retirement ceremony will be held followed by historical presentations given by descendants of the original homesteaders. The flag retirement ceremony will be held at 1:30 pm and presentations will begin at 2:00 pm. Van Tassell is located 18 miles east of Lusk on US Highway 20.
