When the United States turns 250 years old this summer, there will be few places more fitting — and fun — to celebrate it than the rugged, storied heart of Johnson County. Buffalo, Wyoming — a town forged by the indomitable will of the American West — is pulling out every stop in July for the Red White and West 250, a once-in-a-lifetime festival honoring this once-in-a-generation milestone. The weekend will be highlighted by a concert featuring up-and-coming country music star Cole Goodwin, from Georgia, but it also will include a parade, a 1.776-kilometer Run for the Bun, a car show, vendors, bouncy houses, a dedication of the Johnson County History Trail, and much more. The event offers a family-friendly opportunity to celebrate America, learn about the early days of the American West, and have a ton of fun all at the same time. Free screenings of the award-winning Hole in the Wall documentary — making its Wyoming premiere — will take place at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, July 3, and noon on Saturday, July 4. A Fourth of July parade will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 4, down Buffalo's Main Street, to kick off the day's events. The Model A & Pioneer Car Club of Sheridan and Johnson Counties is coordinating a car show following the parade until 2 p.m. in Buffalo’s George Washington Memorial Park along DeSmet Avenue. Run for the Bun The Johnson County YMCA is organizing the most patriotic race of the summer! Run 1.776 kilometers around the track at Grace Field while tackling the ultimate all-American challenge — eat one-half of a hot dog every lap before heading back out on the course. Speed, strategy, and stomach strength are all that matters as participants race for the fastest overall time. Whether you’re here to compete, laugh, or celebrate the Fourth of July with friends and family, this event is all about fun, fitness, and festive chaos. The event will be held at George Grace Field — across the street from the YMCA at the corner of West Fetterman and Klondike Drive — beginning at 11 a.m. Pre-register at this link or sign up on the day of the event. There will be heats running every 20 minutes for eight to 16 individuals who are ready to participate. A cornhole tournament will begin at noon, a whipped cream eating contest will take place at 12:30 p.m., and activities and games are planned throughout the event. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., George Washington Memorial Park will be the location for bouncy houses, vendors and food trucks. The vendor show will take place on the west side of the park near the train engine and the car show. The bouncy houses will be located near Buffalo’s Municipal Pool, which will be open for free admission courtesy of the Buffalo Community Foundation and Blue Peak Fiber Internet & TV. Food vendors will be at various locations in the park. At 2 p.m., a ceremony on the stage along Main Street between the Johnson County Courthouse and Buffalo City Wall will mark the opening of the Johnson County History Walk. Seventeen signs were produced by the Johnson County Semiquincentennial Committee to chronicle the history and important developments in regional history. This ceremony will include two guest speakers, local officials, and more to be announced. The trail includes two signs at the Courthouse, one at City Hall, and one at the Occidental Hotel before turning west along Clear Creek and into the park. Visitors are invited to check out the trail throughout the day and scan the QR codes on the signs to learn more! Cap the Fourth of July with a foot-stomping good time in Prosinski Park thanks to young country music star Cole Goodwin. The concert begins at 4 p.m. with the Man in Tan and will feature another act in addition to Goodwin. There will be beer vendors inside the park and food vendors around the park. Buy tickets for the concert at this link. Goodwin, 24, has garnered attention for his strong, textured voice paired with his meaningful writing and return to an old-school country sound. The Pooler, Georgia, native burst onto the scene in 2023 with the release of his original, self-produced EP Soon Enough. He has toured the Southeast playing honky tonks, clubs, and festivals, as well as opening shows for big-name artists including Zach Top and Luke Bryan.
