The League of Women Voters (LWV) of Wyoming will honor women who helped shape U.S. and Wyoming history as part of the state celebration of the country’s 250th anniversary on Saturday, July 4, at the Wyoming Capitol. At 3 p.m., “The Remarkable Susan,” a one-act play by Tim Kelly, will bring to life the story of suffragist Susan B. Anthony’s 1873 trial for the “crime” of casting a ballot. Set in an upstate New York courtroom, the play follows Anthony as she challenges injustice, confronts prejudice and transforms a predetermined verdict into a powerful call for equality and human dignity. Following the performance at 3:30 p.m., a living history presentation will feature 24 Remarkable Women of Wyoming in the Capitol’s Extension hallway. With a free, colorful special passport in hand, those attending the Capitol festivities can meet historical figures from across Wyoming’s past, hear their stories, and collect passport stamps as they visit with each remarkable woman. Presented by the LWV of Wyoming in the Wyoming Capitol Auditorium and Extension, this free community production will feature a talented local cast. The programs will offer a unique opportunity to explore the struggle for voting rights, to learn about Wyoming’s pioneering women and to celebrate the individuals whose courage and determination helped shape our state and nation. Both presentations are made possible through the Wyoming Semiquincentennial Planning Task Force’s Semiquincentennial Grant Program. “The Remarkable Susan” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Dramatists Play Service.
